02 / ABOUT JAMES

More than 29 years of playing.

I started playing guitar when I was 11 and have spent the years since learning, performing and helping other people find their way into music.

My first musical home was rock, pop and blues. Over time, that grew into a deep interest in jazz harmony and fusion—music that keeps challenging me and keeps the instrument exciting.

I teach across genres, from complete beginners through to advanced players, and I work with students all around the world—from the USA to Australia, across Europe and as far as India. Online lessons can fit around your schedule and your time zone, so distance does not need to get in the way.

I have taught in colleges and at Plymouth University, as well as performing with original artists and function bands. I have played all around the world, including on cruise ships, and continue to work as a live and session guitarist. I’m also endorsed by Shijie Guitars and worked with Rockschool, recording guitar audio for its graded exam work.

What players say.

Words from people who have played, worked and learned with me.

FORMER GUITAR TEACHER

“James is a dedicated, 100% reliable guitarist and musician, capable of ‘mixing it’ with the very best. He can more than handle anything that you throw at him musically. As his teacher, I saw him progress from extremely basic to phenomenal! I don’t remember him ever cancelling a lesson; James will not let you down!

After seeing James play live in quality bands, I can say he knows how and when to shine, and when to sit back. He has flawless timing and is one of the very best I’ve had the pleasure and honour to teach.

As a ‘hired gun’, you are getting Clint Eastwood. James is an extremely serious musician… get him while you can!”
Ian · Former Guitar Teacher

STUDENT

“I was stuck in a rut with my playing when I first met James. He really opened up the guitar theory world for me, introducing so many new ideas, styles and the technical understanding behind it all so that I knew how to become a better player.

James is a fantastic guy — an absolute monster on the guitar, and such a humble, inspiring and caring teacher. I would fully recommend his tuition to anyone in need.”
Rich · Student

ONLINE STUDENT

“I’ve been studying jazz and fusion guitar with James for a while now, and it’s been genuinely transformative. He has a rare ability to break down complex harmonic concepts — voice leading, guide tones and modal interchange — in a way that actually sticks and makes it into your playing. The lessons are always focused and inspiring, and James clearly cares about your progress as a musician, not just covering material. If you’re serious about taking your guitar playing to the next level, I can’t recommend him highly enough.”

PARENT OF A STUDENT

“We started seeing James because my son, who was nine, was very keen to learn guitar, and James has been fantastic. He explains music theory in a way my son can understand and have fun with, with plenty of hands-on practice during the session too. James gives my son clear instructions on what to practise at home, and he always looks forward to his next lesson.”
Gemma · Parent of a Student

STUDENT

“Amazing teacher. I’ve been playing on and off for years, noodling and learning songs I like, but I always wanted to better understand the instrument and create my own stuff. In three months of lessons, James has transformed the way I practise, play and think about music. As a teacher, he’s very patient and supportive, and routinely checks in with me between lessons to see how I’m getting on. Lessons are flexible and, regardless of what we’re working on, he shares his knowledge in a way that is really easy to understand. I really appreciate this, especially with music theory.

With James, I’m playing things I never thought I’d be able to, and my understanding of music is improving all the time. He’s a ridiculously good player and a really nice chap. I can’t recommend him highly enough.”
Tom · Student

STUDENT

“I’ve had a few different guitar lessons with various teachers, but James is by far the best. He is patient and calm and lets you proceed at your own pace. His musical knowledge is vast and he is happy to chat about the music the student likes and the techniques they want to learn — whether that’s theory, a cool tune, lead guitar or rhythm guitar, he knows it all!

Flexible with lesson times and genuinely a nice person. If you are thinking of having guitar lessons… James is your man!”
Kevin · Student

STUDENT

“James came recommended to me by a friend who spoke very highly of him. I have played guitar for some years as a lower-intermediate player, seeing little improvement and wanting to develop my skills and knowledge. James is a fantastic guitar teacher. He works with you to discover the things you would like to play, how you would like to play them, and pitches the lessons at just the right level for you to build your skills and knowledge from the ground up.

He’s incredibly friendly and patient, with a huge depth of knowledge and experience. I’d recommend James to anyone, whether they’re picking up guitar for the first time or they’re an experienced player wishing to progress further.”
Fin · Student

FELLOW TEACHER

“I’ve worked with James for many years. As a musician, he’s top class and capable of anything that’s thrown his way. As a fellow teacher, I understand what it takes to be effective, engaging and to get results. James is your guy! I can’t recommend him highly enough.”
Tim · Fellow Musician & Teacher

ONLINE STUDENT

“James is an amazing player and teacher. I’ve been really enjoying online private lessons with him for the past few months. I found his YouTube channel years ago and contacted him for private lessons straight away, because his playing — especially his timing, legato and improvisation ideas — blew my mind.

I can already see huge improvements in my timing, fretboard knowledge, note choice and improvisation after just a few lessons. I wish I could have in-person lessons, but unfortunately I’m living in the US. If you are looking for a great teacher for fundamentals or advanced topics and skills, you can’t miss James!”
